Internal Examinations
Year 11 Internal Examinations
The Year 11 Internal Examinations series will take place from Monday 1st December to Friday 12th December inclusive. In addition, the Year 11 Internal Art / Art Textiles Examination will take place on Thursday 27th November. The timetable for these exams can be found here. Year 11 students will be in normal teaching lessons when they do not have an examination and full school uniform must be worn throughout the examination period.
Ofqual and the Department for Education (DfE) have introduced arrangements to ensure that if any examinations have to be cancelled in the future there is a plan in place. While it is highly unlikely that such arrangements will be needed, schools are being asked to follow this guidance which asks that when students sit internal examinations their papers are retained. This is to ensure that schools have alternative evidence of student performance to enable alternative methods of awarding grades, such as Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs). We do expect examinations to go ahead as planned in Summer 2026. However, we are making you aware that we will be collecting the data from the Internal Examinations from Monday 1st December to Friday 12th December 2025 and we would use this to determine grades only in the unlikely situation that exams and formal assessment could not go ahead in 2026.
Year 13 Internal Examinations
The Year 13 Internal Examinations series will take place from Thursday 11th December to Thursday 18th December inclusive. In addition, the Year 13 Internal Art Examination will take place on Friday 28th November. Please note Friday 19th December will be a contingency session for our Internal Examination series so students will not usually be required to attend on that day. The timetable for these exams can be found here. Year 13 students will be on study leave during exam week (Thursday 11th December – Thursday 18th December) but are welcome to be on the York Street site if they wish to revise and make use of the facilities. When on site, students must be in school uniform.

Contingency Day 2026
The awarding bodies have designated Wednesday 24 June 2026 as the‘contingency day’ for examinations. This is consistent with the qualification regulators’ document Exam system contingency plan: England, Wales and Northern Ireland – gov.uk/government/publications/exam-systemcontingency- plan-england-wales-and-northern-ireland. The designation of ‘contingency days’ within the common examination timetable is in the event of national or significant local disruption to examinations in the United Kingdom. It is part of the awarding bodies’ standard contingency planning for examinations. Centres must therefore remind candidates that they must remain available until Wednesday 24 June 2026 should an awarding body need to invoke its contingency plan.

Examination boards
At GCSE Level the school currently takes examinations from three examination boards: AQA, OCR and Edexcel and at GCE A Level from: AQA, OCR, WJEC Eduqas and Edexcel.
In the Sixth Form some students may also take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) from the AQA Board. University entrance tests can also be taken where necessary eg the BMAT examination required for those students planning to take up medicine at university.
