The Stitch-A-Tree Project

In July 2018 a group of students were given the opportunity to work on a project alongside Textile Artist, Alice Kettle. The students involved in the programme were asked to stitch a tree which would be arranged in a large embroidery called ‘Forest’.

In Syria, as you may know, there is a war which has impacted on the lives of many children and parents. So, the Refugee Resilience Collective worked with children in a refugee camp and made a forest of tree drawings. Alice Kettle felt inspired and so started the Stitch-A-Tree project. “The metaphor of trees and forests provides a way for us to think about safety and shelter. By coming together to make a large artwork, we are able to actively show our support with those seeking safety and shelter around the world.”  Now in the Whitworth Art Gallery there are hundreds of trees.

When all the trees were collected together and put up in the museum, Mrs Smith and Mrs Dakin took us to the gallery to have a look at our work.  It was amazing to see our work on display in such a prestigious gallery and we will remember the experience forever. The trip was enjoyed by all and we had an amazing time.
