Sixth Form Freshers’ Fair 2018

Tuesday 18th September saw the 2018 Freshers’ Fair – run by students, for students.  During the event the new Year 12 students were introduced to a wide range of clubs and societies that they can get involved with throughout the school year.  I ran a stall advertising the Student Leadership Team (SLT) and was delighted by the number of students who expressed an interest in applying for next year.

Taking part in the fair were the Debating Society, the Politics Society and the Medical Society.  The Politics Society is always very popular and I joined the society after last year’s Freshers’ Fair.  Running this year’s Debating Society was fellow SLT member, Grace Atkinson, Head Girl.  After the event, Grace said she had been pleased with the conversations started from the stall, with students given the opportunity to vote for the topic of their first meeting.

Away from the traditional societies, there were stalls for the CRGS sports teams, the book club and music club.  The music stall, as always, had an array of instruments on show to attract interest.  A new stall, created by the Student Leadership Team, was the Mental Health stall, run by SLT members, John Dent and Junaid Ahmed.

As has been the case for a few years now, we were delighted to welcome the team from the National Citizen Service (NCS) – a voluntary personal and social development programme for 15–17 year olds in the United Kingdom.  The NCS delivered an excellent talk to students, as well as running a very popular stall (I saw many students walking away from the NCS corner with free doughnuts after completing their catchphrase competition!).

The 2018 Freshers’ Fair was a resounding success and it was great to see such interest from the Year 12 students.
