On 17th May, our Year 8 Football team made the long journey to Reading FC to compete in the ESFA National Small Schools’ Cup Final against Causeway School from Sussex. The team had beaten competition from Newcastle, Darlington, Lincoln, Manchester and The Lake District to reach the final at the Madejski Stadium.
Over 90 spectators from Year 8 made the journey along with staff and parents and all enjoyed an exciting game.
Our team took the lead after 20 minutes when Harrison Richardson spun and shot from the edge of the box. However, our opponents came back strongly and scored 2 goals before half-time to take the lead.
At the start of the second half we conceded a penalty which Causeway School converted to take a 3-1 lead. Despite this, our team fought hard and a goal from Joshua Loan-Clarke made for a tense final 15 minutes. The crowd was amazing and helped to inspire the team but the final result was 3-2 to Causeway School.
Despite the disappointment, the team members were extremely proud of their achievement. This was only the second time in the school’s history that a football team had reached a national final.
The team also won the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley District League and will compete for the League and Cup double on Thursday 26th May.
