London Art Gallery Trip 2016

On Thursday 3rd March fifteen Sixth Form Art students travelled to London for two days of art gallery visits with Mr Matthews, Mrs Richards and Mrs Dakin. The early start was soon forgotten as they reached Tate Modern and its world class exhibitions. The techniques and processes of some of the greatest contemporary artists were analysed and will undoubtedly provide students with inspiration for their own future artwork.

After lunch it was off to Tate Britain where the senses were further stimulated by colour, form and even sound, through numerous video art installations. The work on display clearly illustrated the vast array of materials and processes that can be used to create meaningful works of art.

Having fully immersed themselves in art all day, a meal in a lovely Italian restaurant on the banks of the Thames awaited and they were treated to pizza and pasta, and the stunning night-time backdrop of Tower Bridge and HMS Belfast.

First stop on their second day was Knightsbridge and the Saatchi Gallery where on show was an exhibition by female artists from across the globe. Many artworks were responses to major issues such as political oppression and conflict, clearly illustrating the strong cross-curricular links that exist within art. Much of the work was conceptual in nature and therefore once again challenged the conventional views on art.

Their final stop was the British Museum. This collection of objects and artefacts offered students the chance to record images through sketching, note-taking and photography – information that will help immensely with the development of coursework. The Egyptian mummies were of particular interest, but less high profile collections such as the clock room also offered fantastic objects for analysis. Sustenance in the form of waffles and chocolate sauce followed and this seemed to give the boost needed to get them moving towards Euston Station and the train home.

It was a wonderful, rewarding trip and the students were thanked by the accompanying staff for engaging with the artwork and representing themselves and the school so impeccably.
