On 29th January, 11 CRGS Science students attended the Castle Head Field Study Centre at Grange-over-Sands to take part in a two-day Astronomy Masterclass. One of our students reports on the visit:
“We left for Castle Head straight after school and once settled in to our rooms (which we shared with students from 4 other schools), and after having tea, we made hydrogen rockets and competed to see whose rocket could travel the furthest. We then made our own telescope using card and lenses and enjoyed a fascinating presentation by one of the site managers.
After a busy evening – and as we could see nothing out of our telescopes – we went to bed. We were told that if conditions improved we would be able to go outside and view the night sky from our telescopes. About an hour later the opportunity presented itself and we managed to see Jupiter for a few minutes.
On Saturday morning all the schools gave presentations for a chance to win a prize. Unfortunately we didn’t win, despite an interesting and entertaining effort. We were then given a talk by Astro Andy which covered a wide variety of topics surrounding astronomy and stars. This was enlightening and provided us with an ideal opportunity to ask lots of questions on astronomy. The masterclass was a great experience and one which we all thoroughly enjoyed.”
