We are pleased to congratulate Finlay, a Year 9 student, on his recent success in the Scottish Children’s U14 Ski Championships. Finlay reports below.
I was lucky enough to be given permission to take a day off school by Mr Keulemans so that I could travel to Aviemore in the Cairngorm National Park to compete in the Scottish Children’s Ski Championships.
I’ve been ski racing on dry slopes and indoors for the last six years. This summer on the dry slopes I had great success, winning all the championship races and taking the British, English, Scottish and Welsh titles. The weekend in Aviemore was my very first alpine race in the mountains and I was very nervous to be competing against so many amazing racers with so much more alpine experience.
Saturday’s race was a precursor to the championship races. The weather was pretty grey and visibility was difficult but I managed two good runs and finished 5th in the U14s and 16th overall out of 95 racers.
For the main event on Sunday, the sun was shining and we had a stunning day in the mountains with no clouds in site. I had a fantastic race and managed to win the U14 championships and finish in 8th place overall in the whole race. I’m hoping to be selected for the Scottish team in the next twelve months and would love to achieve a British team selection.
I’m so excited to continue my alpine career and can’t wait for my next races which will be in Champéry, Switzerland later this month. I will be competing against the best of the local and British racers.
Finlay Royle
