An Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is the most esteemed scholarship of its type in the UK, designed to inspire students to pursue their dreams and change the world as future leaders in engineering. This year, Sixth Form student, Zachary Heggie, was a very worthy recipient.
Zac’s achievement was the culmination of a rigorous selection process which included an engineering project, an assessed application form with a teacher’s reference and a two-hour, problem-solving aptitude exam.
For Zac’s engineering project, he investigated and built a fully functional model of a hyperloop – a form of transport, similar to a train, that aims to increase efficiency (by reducing friction) and increase speed. Utilising the ‘air-lev’ approach, his model used a cushion of air to eliminate rolling resistance and friction against the ground.
Zac’s project was also selected as an exemplary model and will be used on marketing material, demonstrating the key disciplines of engineering used, from the structural engineering (3D printing) to the electrical and electronic engineering in the air-management and control segments.
The scholarships comprise an annual financial award for each scholar and his/her school along with enrichment activities such as mentoring and industry visits.
Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are indeed prestigious accolades, and we are delighted for Zac.
