On Friday 11th January a group of eight Year 10 and three Year 12 students, accompanied by Mr Mumford, travelled to Hothersall Lodge to take part in the Astronomy Masterclass at Alston Hall Observatory.
On arrival we were greeted by many students from other schools who were also taking part and we enjoyed getting to know each other during our evening meal.
The next day we went to Alston Hall Observatory. There we took part in a variety of space-related activities with our new-found friends. There was also a talk about the solar system and exoplanets which was fascinating. Afterwards we were able to view a 3D real-time simulation of the galaxy under a domed ceiling (the planetarium). We saw the constellations, galaxies, supernovas and much more – one of the highlights of the trip.
The next day, after breakfast, we gathered in a classroom and listened to a fascinating talk on Astrophysics and exoplanets. Afterwards we delivered our presentations and had a lot of fun getting in to character. With the help of great props and much enthusiasm our team won the team challenge!
